Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery SILS
Traditional open abdominal surgery inevitably comes with greater scarring and prolonged recovery. The development of laparoscopic surgery was a landmark advance that had revolutionised surgery. The majority of surgical procedures previously done through a large incision can now be performed laparoscopically (keyhole). Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery have the advantages of reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, lower wound infections, better cosmesis and much faster recovery. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon introduces surgical instruments into the abdomen usually through 3 to 5 small incisions (keyhole). Now Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) allows the operation to be done through a single incision with a single port system with less pain, faster recovery time and virtually no scar.

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery SILS
Much like the VHS vs betamax, Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD wars, the battle of the name for single port surgery rages on. Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is perhaps the most commonly used; others include Single Port Access (SPA) surgery, Laparo-Endoscopic Single-Site (LESS) surgery, Trans-Umbilical Endoscopic Surgery (TUES) and Natural Orifice Trans-Umbilical Surgery (NOTUS). The principle is the same irrespective to whichever name you choose to use. The operation requires only a single albeit slightly larger incision which is usually but not always made in the patient's bellybutton, leaving a hidden, nearly invisible scar.
